Tennessee County Map, 1830
2002
This document is a contemporary map of Tennessee in 1830. According to this document, the majority of Tennessee had been bounded by many new colonies since the 1820s. Colonies including Lauderdale, Fayette and Hardeman in the Western District had been surveyed and acreage in these colonies had been granted to Howard. Thus, it can be inferred that surveyors in the 18th century including Howard had progressed the layout and growth of states. The 1820s were the bulk of Memucan Hunt Howard’s surveying career and thus the inference that can be made is that as Howard surveyed and was granted more lands, Western Tennessee in particular had grown. This also corroborates with “Recollections” because the southwest sliver of land is the land which was in dispute between Mississippi and Tennessee.
