Tennessee County Map, 1820
2002
This document is a map of Tennessee in 1820. The red counties show the counties which were established by boundaries and the white are to be established. This document was used in the biography to support that Memucan Hunt Howard had a role in discovering these counties, as in 1820, which was early in Howard’s surveying career. The locations of the land grants of which Memucan Hunt Howard had discovered did not yet have boundaries. Thus, it can be inferred that Howard and other surveyors in the 19th century played a role in setting boundaries for Western Tennessee through their land grants.
