James Caruthers and Memucan H. Howard are Granted 3,840 Acres of Land in Fayette, Tennessee
December 16, 1829
This land grant record is one of three Fayette Tennessee, land grants, warrant number 1485. James Caruthers and Memucan H. Howard were granted 3,840 acres of land in Fayette, Tennessee on the 16th of December, 1829. This is one of the later land grants given to Howard, which is reason for why it is one of the grandest.
We used this to show that Howard was given often times generous land grants for his work in surveying western Tennessee. It can be inferred that Memucan Hunt Howard was a pioneer in portions of counties, as supported by the Tennessee maps between 1820 and 1840. It can also be inferred that selling such large amounts of land (3,840) is what provided Howard with his great wealth which allowed him to donate nearly $72,000 in the later stages of his life.
