This document was written in 1883 at the request of former Governor James D. Porter to set to paper Memucan Hunt Howard’s experiences surveying the Tennessee wilderness during the early years of the state’s history. A shortened and edited version of these papers were published in a 1902 volume of The American Historical Magazine by the Tennessee Historical Society.
